What most people in our community don’t realize is that Little League baseball has been a part of the Gainesville/Haymarket community for more than 40 years. Gainesville District Little League (GDLL), was chartered through Little League International back in the early 1970 and for more than 40 years served as the only baseball and softball organization to support the needs of the youth in our community. GDLL’s support included the traditional Little League baseball program on the field and the development of baseball and softball facilities throughout western Prince William County.
Over the past 46 years, the GDLL program thrived and grew exponentially as the developers moved in, providing the community with spirited competition and great youth baseball. As a part of Little League’s Virginia District #10, GDLL’s Tournament (All Star) teams experienced the thrill of winning District Tournament Championships and the tradition of advancing deep into District and State tournament play.
While teams experienced success on the field, GDLL’s off-field efforts also paid off. Through the support of GDLL members, youth baseball and softball fields were constructed throughout the community. These facilities include the softball fields at Tyler Elementary School, the baseball fields at Pace West Elementary School, and through the efforts of the entire GDLL family the successful petition of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors to re-designate Catharpin Park as a youth baseball and softball facility, instead of the adult softball complex originally planned.
As the 2017 fallbaseball season starts, Bull Run Little League will continue the tradition of the Little League success experienced for so many years. Little League Baseball is the largest all volunteer youth sports program in the world and is entrenched in the hearts of youth baseball players everywhere. Bull Run Little League is proud to carry on the traditions of Little League baseball started so many years ago in our community.
